Leadership and Listening

One of the primary roles of leadership is listening. Not just hearing, but drawing out from people their own voices. We recently spent a day with close to 60 people from our church listening to God and then listening to each other. It was powerful. It was unifying. It was inspiring.

Our theme for the recent day we spent with our church team was, "Celebrate the past...Create the future." I think one of the ways to draw out other people's voice is to genuinely invite them to be a part of founding the future together. (Peter Drucker said, "The best way to predict the future is to create it.")

When people feel heard they feel cared for. When people feel heard they feel as if they have made a difference in the future and formation of the whole. When people feel heard they feel ownership.

How can we do a better job of drawing out others voices, hearing from them and inviting their input?

Listen and Learn

Keeping an open posture towards others is not only endearing and good for relationships; it is also a great way to keep learning. One of the traits of the elusive characteristic of humility is to listen genuinely as if the other person really does have something to teach us. I have tried to live sincerely believing that everyone I meet has something they can teach me if I will draw it out of them.

Wisdom in Listening More Than Talking

There is wisdom in doing more listening than talking. Asking questions. How about making an effort to do this today?
