True Community

"Community is the place where the person you least want to live with always lives."
Henri Nouwen

True community involves things like authenticity, acceptance, empathy, conflict, forgiveness, confrontation, inclusion and gratitude. When a person experiences true community there's nothing quite like it. It really takes a miracle to happen. Even if you've had a little taste of it, you will long for it for the rest of your life. God made you to live in deep community.

The Bible lays out a dream that God's people would live in little communities. Community is far more than the mutual enjoyment of each other's company. Like a family, we don't always get to choose who is in community with us. Like a platoon, we learn to fight together and not against one another because our lives and our mission  depend on it.

Too many times we settle for pseudo-community. It's easier, less risky and leaves an easy way out. What if our churches invited people not only to Christ, but also into loving, transformational community?
