Leadercast 2011

We recently held a leadership conference at our church. Through a live satellite feed we were able to have some of the world's best and most influential leaders for one day. John Maxwell's organization Giant Impact put it on and it contained some fabulous leadership ideas and challenges. Over 80,000 people took it in around the world 46 of which were in Moose Jaw at Victory Church. Here are 5 highlights for me.

1. Most of the people who attended were attending as business people and brought in by their companies. There were more people there not from our church than from our church. How cool to be able as a church to provide great leadership material to help the businesses in our community. One person who had never been to our church commented that they we pleasantly surprised by the quality of the facility for conferences such as these and encouraged us to do more. I can't tell you how excited I get when I think of the potential and power of simply bringing godly principles into daily life. This is a passion of mine. LOVE IT!

2. Many of our own people were able to be trained up in leadership, what a great investment into the life of our church. Our church will rise or fall in large part as a result of the stewardship of it's leaders. How I pray that God will give us godly and great leaders and that He will grow us into the people He has called us to be. Leadership development matters! One of the things I long for our church to be is a "learning environment", a place where we are all eager to grow and become more and more who God has made us to be. If we become the right people, we will do the right things. 'Being' must always come before 'doing'.

3. One of the themes of the day was the need for innovation and creativity. I was challenged afresh to stay as cutting edge as possible in every area of my life. Innovation and creativity are inspiring and are needed if we are going to forge a better tomorrow. The breakthroughs that got us to where we are are not going to get us to where we need to go. We need new breakthroughs, let's not get stuck in the past.

4. Here are some notes one the conference I stole from Dan Cathy.

Seth Godin
Either you defend the status quo, or you invent the future.
Interchangeable parts develop interchangeable people, and interchangeable people create average products for average people. If you want to create remarkable products, you must hire irreplaceable people.
Management is getting people to do what you already see. Leadership is giving people a platform and then getting out of the way.
We have to stop yelling at our audience, and earn the right to start whispering to them.

John Maxwell:
Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.
No matter how talented you are, you’ll never reach your full potential if you’re out of position.
Too many people are like travel agents… sending people to places they haven’t even been themselves.
Managers try to solve problems, leaders try to create momentum.

Dave Ramsey:
Leadership is service & a privilege. I'm not the boss of people, but a servant of people.
Read Proverbs. The book of Proverbs is a masters degree in business and finance...

Sir Ken Robinson:
If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.
As a culture, we stigmatize mistakes, but we forget that our mistakes lead us to success.
We do not grow into creativity… we get educated out of it. Most adults think that they are not creative. And yet all children think that they are.

Muhtar Kent:
A brand is a promise. A good brand is a promise kept.

Suzy Welch:
Ask yourself when decision-making, "Where will this lead me in 10 min, 10 mos, & 10 yrs?” 10-10-10 is a decision-making process. It's about taking the decisions you have and thinking about their future impact.

None of us are the people we were, and none of us are the people we will become.
Your values are like your fingerprint. They are the legacy you want to leave.
What do you want people to say about you when you are not in the room?

Frans Johansson:
People that change the world and innovate try far more new ideas.
All innovation seems obvious after the fact, the trick is to come up with ideas before the fact.
Diversity drives innovation. The best ideas emerge when very different perspectives meet.

Erin Gruwell of @freedomwriters:
If you teach one, they will teach another.
I believe in hope and 2nd chances. Everyone has a story. There is power in telling your story.

Coach Mack Brown:
You better get up and reinvent yourself every year with enthusiasm. Create an edge everyday.
